Active shooter training held in Martins Ferry

By Aly Cohen

Martins Ferry, OH —

The Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy, a division of Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine's office, visited Martins Ferry High School this morning for the "Active Shooter Training for Educators" program.

Law enforcement training officer Scott Whatley gave the presentation and is one of three instructors in the Ohio area who gives this four-hour seminar. It's aimed to inform educators how to recognize warning signs of mentally unstable students who might be a threat to themselves or others, how to intervene, and how to effectively plan for a worst-case scenario.

Martins Ferry Superintendent Dirk Fitch saw the presentation in Columbus and knew it was something that could benefit his instructors and officials in the area.

"I would rather be over-prepared than under-prepared. As the gentleman just told us several times, in the last several years going back to 2007, there's been zero deaths due to fires in schools, because we plan and we practice. For an active shooter, nobody had a plan, and now everybody is preparing," Fitch said.

The presentation covers topics like risk factors and red flags being addressed in the correct manner, as well as looking back on school shootings and the factors that were involved in them.

The program has been in effect for about a year now.
