OHIO VALLEY —
American Electric Power officials said on Monday crews have restored service to 98 percent of customers who lost power due to storm damage.
In the Ohio Valley, all AEP customers have power except 303 in Guernsey County.
For Mon Power customers, 1,298 were still without power in Wetzel County and 643 in Tyler County as of Monday afternoon.
Statewide in West Virginia, about 74,000 households are still without power as authorities begin assessing the damage from the recent summer storms
Appalachian Power said Monday afternoon it had about 51,000 customers still without service, including nearly 15,000 in Kanawha County. Mon Power says it has about 23,000 awaiting restoration.
The first storm hit on June 29. Smaller subsequent storms have caused outages for people who didn't lose power the first time or who had gotten back on the grid.
The state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management says it's beginning preliminary damage assessments with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Those reports will determine eligibility for federal disaster assistance.
The American Red Cross says it also has 200 workers out assessing damage in West Virginia and helping residents get the services they need to recover.
In Ohio, power is coming back to areas in the central and southwest part of the state more than a week after violent storms hit.
AEP said it has about 31,000 who still don't have electricity, mostly in Athens, Guernsey, Licking and Muskingum counties. The utility company said it had 660,000 customers affected by the storms at one point.
Meanwhile, the American Red Cross said it is closing shelters in Franklin, Muskingum and Fairfield as power returns to those areas. It says shelters will remain open in Perry, Hocking, Licking and Guernsey counties as long as there's a need.
