Shadyside, OH —

An apartment building fire started around 5:30p.m. in Shadyside in the 3800 block of Highland Avenue.

Officials say they got a call from concerned neighbors that smoke was coming from the roof of the building.

When they arrived, they found fire coming through the basement, spreading to the first and second floor.

Officials say it started near the building's furnace and nobody was home at the time but thankfully crews were close by.

"There was a structure fire they were calling in Bellaire and it turned out to be a false alarm," said Chief David Lenz of the Shadyside Volunteer Fire Department. "So we actually had a crew still at the station from that call and then they responded down here. We had three people and it's that time of evening people coming home from work and it took a little while to get here."

The building sustained heavy damage on the first floor. No one was hurt. A state fire marshal will be out Wednesday morning to investigate.
