Local steel and government leaders gathered together in the heart of the open hearth facility as workers cleaned up steel scrap materials to prepare the area for demolition.
The visible facade of the open hearth will be down by the end of 2007 and the balance of the furnace will be torn down by the fall of 2008.
Weirton Mayor Mark Harris said the demolition is an important step in paving the way for new investment opportunities in downtown Weirton.
