JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

After weeks of searching for him, officials captured an attempted murder suspect in Jefferson County on Friday.

Antonio Johnson was indicted in July by a Jefferson County grand jury on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault, having a weapon under a disability and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle. He was also recently charged with escape.

Authorities finally received the break in the case that they needed to capture Johnson.

"We received an anonymous tip that Antonio Johnson was residing at this house in Smithfield," Deputy U.S. Marshal Chad Simpson said.

The case began with an incident in Steubenville's Hilltop neighborhood earlier this summer in which two people were shot at with an AK-47 assault rifle during the day.

On Friday, members of the Mountain State Fugitive Task Force and Steubenville police found Johnson hiding at a house on Main Street in Smithfield.

Police said they're not sure how long Johnson had been at the house, but he was there when it mattered the most. Simpson said officials had been conducting surveillance on the house and on Friday, knocked on the door, announced their presence, entered the home, found Johnson and arrested him.

"Surprisingly enough, a lot of these guys will stay in the area because they know people that are able to hide them out or they'll have friends or relatives that will assist them," Simpson said.

Officials said the severe charges in connection with the Steubenville shooting put them on high alert when searching the Smithfield house.

"Because of the severity of the AK-47 -- that's a pretty large rifle to be carrying around town and he struck four different houses. Other residents could have been injured in this incident. He has a violent history of drugs and firearms," Simpson said. "We didn't know if he could still be armed; we thought that he would be armed. Luckily, we caught him off-guard (and) caught him by surprise upstairs."

Officials did find a 9 mm handgun in the Smithfield house where Johnson was apprehended.

Johnson was transported to the Jefferson County Justice Center, where he is being held. As of early Friday afternoon, bail had not yet been set.
