Atwood Resort to reopen, expand this summer

By Briona Arradondo and  NEWS9

CARROLL COUNTY, Ohio —

Plans are moving forward for Atwood Lake Resort in Carroll County, according to county commissioners.

The property has been closed for about two years, and a new company plans to reopen and expand the resort this summer. Commissioner Tom Wheaton detailed what tasks workers need to complete.

"We're going through to see what needs to be changed out such as mattresses, TVs," said Wheaton.

Atwood Resort experienced some financial troubles in 2010, and Radius Hospitality will now take over the lease to the property. Wheaton said there are plans to take advantage of the oil and gas boom to bring in more money.

"We're hoping to leverage the oil and gas industry and have their people stay there for a period of time while we do some remodeling," said Wheaton.

Several possible additions to the resort are in store, such as horse center, skating rink, water park or even a paintball arena. And the prospects are promising.

"It's very important for the jobs, but also the establishments in our county and even in Tuscarawas County, where people are doing their shopping, buying gas, boat rentals, the marinas," said Wheaton.

Locals were vocal about keeping the resort open. Wheaton said Radius wants to get the public involved.

"It's a landmark that can't go away," Wheaton said. "It's too beautiful of a place to let it just be torn down and be gone."

The company will present its plans for the resort to the public next Friday, May 11, at 11 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend and voice their thoughts.
