Baby delivered at local Walmart

By Alex Koscevic

WEIRTON, W.Va. —

An expectant mother had an unexpected delivery Monday -- outside the Weirton Walmart.

Weirton Area Ambulance Service was called to the Walmart around 8 a.m. Monday. When paramedics Dave Fluharty and Ryan Schupbach got to the scene, the baby was delivered only four minutes later.

The Weirton Fire Department also responded to the call.

According to medical supervisor Eric Zaney, this was the woman's fourth child, and labor gets shorter with each delivery.

Calls for baby deliveries are rare, he said.

"I would imagine that is our first baby delivery in 10 years here at the ambulance service. It's extremely rare that children are born out of the hospital, of course, unless there's midwives involved in it," Zaney said.

The mother of the baby was not available for comment, but we are told she was transported to Weirton Medical Center.

There is no word on how she or her baby are doing.
