Barnesville Officials Eye New Community Center

BARNESVILLE, Ohio —

Members of the community have joined forces to form a steering committee for the possible community recreation center.

That committee will be integral in gathering information to determine the feasibility of the project as well as possible functions, and locations of the center.

"There's a need in the community for activities to provide recreation options and other options for really everyone," said William Knox, a member of the steering committee.

Knox told NEWS9 the need for a recreation center expands beyond athletic fields and playgrounds.

"Many of our seniors travel to Wheeling, Cambridge and further for therapy. Our swim team travels to Wheeling to practice and even further to compete," said Knox.

With a need established, the trick is now to find funding for the project.

"The likelihood of a recreation levy being utilized is very strong," said Knox.

He said a levy would aid the financing of the overall project.

The feasibility study underway costs $9500. It is being funded by the Village of Barnesville, Barnesville Hospital, Barnesville Exempted Village School District, and the Barnesville Community Foundation.

"It's a project that may be beyond the scope financially of the collective efforts of our broad community, but it might not be, and that's what this feasibility study is designed to do is determine whether or not the project is doable and affordable," said Knox.

Possible functions of the center include an indoor swimming pool, a track, tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts. Furthermore the facility could house physical, cardiac, and pulmonary therapy facilities.

Locations under consideration include sites at Memorial Park in Barnesville along with at least 4 other locations around the area.

"Ultimately the community will decide through a vote as to whether we are able to do this project," said Knox.

With the planning process just underway, officials are encouraging public comments and public input along the way.

The committee expects to hold a public meeting in March or April where questions and comments will be gathered for the final feasibility report.
