BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

A Belmont County man was taken into custody on 12 outstanding warrants Monday night after pawn shop employees notified police of suspicious activity.

Richard Calvin Matthews, 41, was taken into custody without incident. Officials said Matthews was wanted on seven outstanding warrants from Northern and Western courts and an additional five warrants were issued on Tuesday from Eastern Court.

Bellaire Police Chief Mike Kovalyk said they looked into Matthews' background after pawn shop employees became suspicious of Matthews' activity and notified police.

Officials said Matthews pawned 19 expensive power tools in less than 10 days at Cashland in Bellaire. After Cashland notified police, investigators discovered Matthews' outstanding warrants.

Matthews was arrested Monday night. Officials said several of the warrants do not permit bond, and Belmont County Jail officials said Matthews remained in jail on Tuesday.

NEWS9 is working to learn what the warrants were for, but Kovalyk said Matthews has been arrested at least three times by Bellaire police in the past year.

Cashland employees were not permitted to speak with NEWS9 Tuesday morning.
