Bellaire police catch runaway pig

By Alex Koscevic

Bellaire police responded to a unique runaway call Tuesday morning. According to Police Chief Mike Kovalyk, officers responded to 48th Street after a caller said a pig was running loose.

"I couldn't believe it," said Russell Burkhart, who lives near 48th Street. "I told my daughter I thought she was crazy when she told us there was a pig over there."

"They put it in the car, and they had to stop a lot of traffic so they could get the pig slowed down, but they caught it," Burkhart said.

After putting the pig in the back of a cruiser, the called off-duty officer Greg Clark, who has a farm.

"I got a phone call from a fellow law enforcement officer they didn't know how to handle," Clark said, adding that he thought they wanted backup for a dangerous situation.

"Turns out they had a pig running loose in the middle of  Bellaire, Clark said.

Clark said police talked to the owner, and he did not want the animal back. According to Clark, owning a farm animal as a pet is a lot of work

"They don't know the upkeep of them, the responsibility and how much maintenance is involved in them, and apparently this one just got turned loose," he said.

Clark, who owns two other pigs among other farm animals, said he'll keep the pig, and that the new addition will have plenty of friends.

"I guess we got a new pet," Clark said.
