Belmont Co. commissioner indicted on another felony charge

By NEWS9

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

A Belmont County commissioner already facing five charges from two separate cases has been indicted on another count.

Matt D. Coffland was indicted by the Belmont County Grand Jury on Aug. 1 on one count of assault against a peace officer, a fourth-degree felony.

Special prosecutor Thomas A. Hampton said in an email to NEWS9 that Coffland was served with a copy of the indictment. A warrant was not issued, and he was not arrested on the indictment.

Coffland is scheduled to be arraigned on the newest charge Thursday at 11 a.m. in front of Judge Jennifer L. Sargus in the Belmont County Courthouse, Hampton said.

Hampton said he will continue as special prosecutor for the newest case against Coffland.

Coffland recently had a pretrial conference for an incident involving liquor control agents on April 1 at the Tiger Pub, a bar Coffland owns in Shadyside.

Both Coffland and his son were charged with three misdemeanor counts of obstruction, filed by liquor control officials, and a date will be set for trial.

In a separate incident, Coffland was charged with felony assault and disorderly conduct. Officials said that at Jamboree In The Hills, Coffland threw a bottle at an officer. A preliminary hearing will be set for that case.

After the Jamboree incident, Coffland was arrested and taken to jail. He was released after posting $5,000 bond, and one condition was that he not drink alcohol or enter a bar, with the exception of his own.

Coffland remains free on bond. Stay with NEWS9, WTOV9.com and WTOV9 Mobile for continuing coverage.
