BELMONT AND OHIO COUNTIES —

Belmont and Ohio counties partnered Saturday with local police departments to participate in Drug Take Back Day.

Workers gathered unused and expired pills from residents at the St. Clairsville Riesbeck's store in Belmont County. Pills were also brought to Elm Grove Pharmacy and the House of Carpenter on Wheeling Island.

At least 50 pounds of pills are expected to fill garbage bags, and pharmacists said it's a good way to keep people safe.

"People can bring in their prescriptions so they're not left around the house for people to steal or for children to get into," said Raegan Kasserman, a Riesbeck's pharmacist. "There are not many opportunities to get rid of the drugs other than throwing them in the trash."

Officials said a good way to get rid of old prescription drugs is to mix pills with used coffee grounds or cat litter in a sealable container.
