Bergholz Mother Saves Children From Fire

A Bergholz mother saved her young child and infant from a house fire after a faulty box fan sparked a blaze Thursday, officials said.

The fire broke out in a home on Township Road 276 around 2 p.m. Getting water to the fire was tough, and crews from eight neighboring communities brought in extra tankers and dragged 1,000 feet of water hose up a hill.

Bergholz Fire Chief John Marsh said the toughest part about the fire was getting volunteer crews to the scene during the middle of a work day. Another challenge was that crews didn't know exactly what they would encounter at the scene.

"When you get that call, you never know what to expect. (You) prepare for the worst and hope for the best. That's what we do when your pager goes off," Marsh said.

There were no reported injuries, but the home, which was more than 100 years old, was completely destroyed.
