Bishop Donahue students celebrated the lives of three people killed in a plane crash by carrying on community service on Thursday.

The crash at Coney Island in New York four years ago killed students JoBeth Gross, Danielle Block and Block's father, Courtney.

Teachers said the three victims enjoyed community service, so students carried on that legacy by doing their own projects Thursday.

Some students worked at the Catholic neighborhood center in Wheeling, cleaning and helping to prepare food.

"I think that it's important for them to remember that if we can take exactly something from who they were and make it who we are, we can make the world a whole better place," said Loretta Metz, of Bishop Donahue Memorial High School.

While some of the current students didn't know the crash victims, teachers said they each learned a lesson of community service.
