Bishops Chapel Renovations complete

By Philip Stahl

WHEELING, W.Va. –

The Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston has reopened the century-and-a-half old Bishops Chapel, located in the center of Mount Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling.

The chapel closed last August after the death of Bishop Emeritus Bernard Schmitt for renovations and to excavate the floor to add more crypts for future bishops.

The diocese said that a new marble floor was installed after the crypts were put in. Schmitt's tomb was engraved, the ceiling and walls were repainted after new plaster was installed, and a replica of the mosaic of the Good Shepherd from the Crypt Church in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception was erected, along with a new alter.

The chapel was completed in 1879 and is the final resting place of six former diocesan bishops.
