Lindsey Salsberry has been through a lot in the past year.
She was diagnosed with cancer, and that has meant going through countless blood transfusions.
Thursday people in her community rolled up their sleeves to lend a hand, and give a life-saving gift.
"She doesn't need a Christmas gift in a box this year, this is what she needs, and I think she needs the support," said Barbara Hagerty, a blood donor.
A blood drive was held Thursday in Lindsey Salsberry's honor.
The 20-year-old West Virginia University student was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, and her treatment includes chemotherapy and blood transfusions. She's had so many transfusions that her family and community came together to help her give back.
"The blood collected today, she may never see herself, but we know someone else will be helped, and when she does need her blood, it will be available," said Rick Salsberry, Lindsey's dad.
The Central Blood Bank out of Pittsburgh originally thought between 50 and 75 people would show up. They revised those expectations after a flood of phone calls. Now they expect up to 150.
It's people from around the valley, and even the country. Barbara Hagerty is from Washington state. She was in Wellsville visiting family over the holidays, and after learning about Lindsey's illness, decided to stay an extra day to donate blood. It's things like that that amaze the Salsberry family.
"It's great to know that there are people out there willing to give everything they can to children like Lindsey and other just to help them out," said Salsberry.
Lindsey Salsberry will go into surgery next week and then undergo more chemotherapy and blood transfusions. Which makes today's drive that much more meaningful.
