Board denies recommendation for old Oak Glen stadium

NEWELL, W.Va. —

The debate concerning the former Oak Glen stadium continues, after the Hancock County School Board rejected a recommendation by Superintendent Sue Smith.

Smith said her recommendation, which she arrived at by help of legal counsel, was to have the stadium sold at public auction with a 10 percent down payment due the day of the sale. The rest of the money would have to be paid within five days.

The board voted that down, and some residents said they don't agree with Smith's recommendation either.

Robin Adams said she has read the state law, which says that surplus property can be bought by a nonprofit for a "nominal fee." She said this option might not give the Board the money they are looking for, but it will help the community and the kids.

"I just don't think it should be about the money. They say they need the money to build a maintenance building. They have the field, be happy with that, let this one stay in the community," said Adams.

Smith said one issue with proceeding with the sale in that manner is that the word "nominal" is open to interpretation. Also, she said, the board wants to get fair market value for the property.

Smith said she's working on a new recommendation, which she hopes to present to the Board by October.
