CLARINGTON, Ohio —
Police are investigating after a body was discovered pinned between logs in the Ohio River early Monday.
West Virginia State Police investigators said the unidentified victim was an unclothed white male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall.
The Wetzel County medical examiner was also called to the scene and officials said the body will be sent to Morgantown or Charleston for an autopsy. Final results may take up to two weeks since investigators said it appears the victim was in the water for some time.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office received a report of a body in the river just after 5 a.m. about a half-mile south of Clarington. Officials from the Sheriff's Office were the first at the scene and said the body was floating near the shore, pinned by logs.
Monroe County Sheriff Charles Black said the case was turned over to West Virginia State Police because the river is the State Police's jurisdiction.
Local residents said they were shocked to hear the news Monday.
"It's pretty surprising and disturbing. I never figured it'd happen this close to home," said Powhatan Point resident Allen Young. "I hope they find out what's going on with this man."
