A local story continues to gain national attention. A local mother lost her leadership position with a local Boy Scouts troop because of her sexual orientation.
This led to hundreds of thousands of people supporting Jen Tyrrell and her mission to change the BSA policy that prevents gays from being involved with the scouts.
Today, the Boy Scouts of America addressed the policy Tyrell has been fighting against.
"I've personally not had much problem," Tyrrell said. "Once people get to know me, they don't care that I'm gay. So I've not necessarily been met with too much prejudice."
Tyrell said she has gotten plenty of local support, and the Ohio Valley seems to be ready to accept gay scout leaders, but officials with the Boy Scouts of America said they do not plan to change their current policy that bans gay people's involvement in the organization.
Tyrrell said the BSA's refusal to change their policy shows that the organization is somewhat dated.
"I think that the almost 300,000 signatures on my petition and the growing list of celebrities' signatures and President Obama's backing of gay marriage, I think that we're sending a huge message, and the Boy Scouts seem to be one of the last ones holding out."
The BSA acknowledges that they received Tyrrell's petition, but they make it clear that when the introduction of a resolution to a policy is presented, that does not mean a change is in the works.
But Tyrrell remains optimistic.
"I've heard repeatedly from other people before all this happened that they won't put their children in scouts because of that, straight people and gay people alike. So there has already been some show of solidarity in that area, and I think that to show the Boy Scouts that we're serious, I guess we will just have to continue to do that."
The Boy Scouts of America policy states that the organization does not ask the sexuality of their employees, members or volunteers. However, they do not allow membership to individuals who are openly gay or participate in behavior that would go against the mission of the BSA.
