GUERNSEY COUNTY, Ohio —

The Guernsey County Sheriff's Office is investigating a double homicide Sunday after receiving 911 calls of shots fired in the Cambridge area.

Deputies arrived at Conventry Estates and found a white man dead in the front yard of an apartment, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Office. They also found a second black man laying in the yard behind the same apartment.

Deputies said the black man suffered multiple wounds and was still alive when he was found. He was transported to Southeast Ohio Regional Medical Center, where he later died, deputies said.

The Sheriff's Office along with theOhio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation processed the crime scene, deputies said.

NEWS9 talked to authorities at the scene. They said they located Nijier Thomas in Zanesville, who is a renter of the apartment where the crime happened. Investigators said a double homicide in the county has been a rare occurrence.

The Stark County Coroner's Office will perform autopsies on both bodies, and the identity of the victims will not be immediately released, deputies said.
