DALLAS, W.Va. —

Officials said they believe a truck driving on Dallas Pike struck a gas line, causing an evacuation Thursday morning in part of Marshall County.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. just across the street from the Dallas Post Office. Residents in the area said they smelled natural gas shortly after a large truck passed through town.

Shortly after receiving a 911 call, members of the Dallas Volunteer Fire Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and the Emergency Management Agency responded.

The area was evacuated and people were taken to a nearby church until the line could be capped by the Mountaineer Gas Co., a process that took about an hour.

The evacuation order as a result of the leak was lifted by noon, but there is still work left to do.

“They are repairing the line,” said Mike Mucheck, deputy director of the Marshall County EMA. “It’s their ball game now. The line is capped. There is no free flowing gas. Like I say, it was a low-pressure line so it wasn't like it was spewing a lot of gas, but as a precautionary measure, actions were taken to keep everyone from being in close proximity.”

As of 4:45 p.m., crews were still working to fix the broken line.
