SISTERSVILLE, W.Va. —

Police say an Ohio man charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend and her pregnant sister in Michigan fatally shot himself in a remote Tyler County cabin after seeing U.S. marshals closing in on him.

Michigan State Police Lt. Sean Furlong said the federal marshals heard a gunshot then found 38-year-old Thomas Fritz dead in the Sistersville cabin Tuesday night.

Police say the Sylvania, Ohio, man shot his ex-girlfriend, Amy Merrill, her pregnant 24-year-old sister, Lisa Gritzmaker, and their mother, Robin Lynn McCowan, on Friday at the Blissfield, Mich., home he and Merrill shared until recently. Only McCowan survived.

Previous reports said that Fritz might head to Ohio and was considered armed and dangerous. U.S. marshals said they got a tip from officers in Michigan that he was hiding out in the Sistersville area.

While marshals and officers from several other agencies were combing the area Tuesday night, they came across a cabin in the woods near Cow House Road and said they spotted a man behind the cabin with a gun.

They confirmed the man started yelling and went in the house, which is when marshals said they heard one shot come from inside. When marshals got inside, they said they found a man with a self-inflicted fatal gunshot wound.

The investigation into his death is now in the hands of the Tyler County Sheriff's Office.
