Officials: Souvenir, not explosive grenade, found in Hancock Co. home

By NEWS9

HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. —

Officials said a souvenir, not an explosive grenade, caused much commotion in a Hancock County neighborhood on Wednesday.

Sheriff Mike White said people were cleaning out a closet and found it in a box that belonged to a deceased relative.

White said his department received a call about the object around 11 a.m., prompting emergency crews, including the West Virginia State Police, to respond. The home on Stoneridge Lane in the New Manchester area was evacuated.

Officials removed the object around noon and said they believe it is an old World War II-style grenade that was a souvenir without explosives in it.

The state police and a bomb squad removed it and will safely dispose of it, officials said.
