WEIRTON, W.Va. —
A man seriously hurt in an all-terrain vehicle crash in the woods near Weirton is in a Pittsburgh hospital being treated for what paramedics called "multiple system trauma."
The crash happened some time after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, although the 32-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, could not tell paramedics how long he was in the woods.
"He said he lost his brakes, hit a tree, lost consciousness, the ATV rolled over on top of him, from what he said, and he doesn't know how long he was unconscious," said Steve Jenkins, a paramedic crew chief for the Weirton Area Ambulance and Rescue Squad.
The injured man's cellphone was smashed in the crash, and because his ribs were severely bruised, he could not yell for help.
He fashioned a walking stick out of a tree branch and crawled between 300 and 400 yards out of the woods. He made his way to the front porch of an apartment on Locust Avenue, knocked on the door and asked someone inside to call 911.
First responders found him wrapped in a blanket sitting in front of the apartment.
"(He was) just as alert and as oriented as he could be," said Jenkins. "It was just an immense level of pain he was in. It's remarkable. He's just very fortunate to be alive."
An ambulance took the man to Madonna High School where a medical helicopter was waiting. He was flown to the Mercy-University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where his condition was not released.
The ATV has not yet been recovered. Paramedics said the rider did not clearly describe where he'd left it.
Residents reported hearing an ATV traveling quickly on city streets in that neighborhood as late as 9:30 Sunday evening.
It's illegal to operate an ATV on Weirton's city streets.
