OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —
A West Liberty University student was arrested Friday morning in connection with a shooting death in Florida.
Vernon Cedric Dunnom, 24, was arrested without incident at the Beta Hall dormitory on campus.
The West Liberty University website has Dunnom listed as a junior who plays for the Hilltoppers football team. He is No. 38 and plays defensive end.
According to an arrest warrant, Dunnom is charged in Florida with first-degree murder, attempted murder and two counts of robbery.
The charges stem from the death of one man and the shooting of another during a robbery on Nov. 17 in Miami Dade, Fla.
"Him and another male subject were involved in a robbery of two other males. Both males were shot. One died instantly, and the other actually survived," Deputy U.S. Marshal Chad Simpson said.
Simpson said he received information from the U.S. Marshal's Service in Miami, Fla., requesting assistance.
"We received information that he was a student at West Liberty and also a football player. We further found out that he was actually living in the Beta dorm," Simpson said. "We initially attempted to make contact at his room (and) he was not there, so we conducted more surveillance and actually located him downstairs in another female's room."
Dunnom was arrested by officials with the Mountain State Fugitive Task Force, including the U.S. Marshals Service, Ohio County Sheriff's Office and West Liberty police.
"Anytime there's a homicide in the area, that's our No. 1 priority, so we stop everything else we're doing. And we're going to make sure we get these guys that are wanted for these dangerous crimes -- such as homicide -- locked up or at least located so we know their whereabouts," Simpson said.
Dunnom's expression was without emotion as he was arraigned in Ohio County Magistrate Court before Magistrate Joe Roxby.
Simpson said a detective from Miami is on the way to interview Dunnom, who will be transported to the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail pending extradition to Florida.
People on campus that NEWS9 spoke with said they were surprised by the arrest.
"I hope it is as safe as I think it is. We've never really been afraid to go out at night or anything before," one person said. "It always seemed safe before, so hopefully it's as safe as we thought."
West Liberty spokeswoman Maureen Zambito said in a statement, "West Liberty University has and shall continue to respect the federally protected rights of its students. In addition, we shall continue to investigate credible allegations involving our students and take appropriate action."
