BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. —

Multiple fire departments battled a brush fire that spread quickly in Brooke County, and Mother Nature ended up giving crews a hand.

Officials said the fire started around 10 a.m. in the back yard of a home off Route 67 – also called Bethany Pike – near Route 88 in the southern part of the county.

Because of the wind, the fire spread down over a hillside and at one point, the flames covered several acres of ground.

It took crews more than five hours to get the flames under control, and a first responder was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation.

The Tanker Task Force was called in to help provide water, and crews from Wellsburg, Follansbee and Hooverson Heights were a few of the fire departments at the scene. But, the rain ultimately helped douse the flames.

No one was home at the time and the cause remained unknown as of 5 p.m.
