Brooke Hills Park Getting Observatory

The $8.5 million observatory coming to Brooke Hills Park is causing excitement.

It's unique design will have a total of 43 telescopes and several roll off roof pads and classrooms.

The director of the Near Earth Foundation said the complex can be used for research and education.

"Classes can control the telescopes on site or if you wish you can dial in from anywhere on the planet," said Robert Strong, director.

That means someone in Europe can log onto the internet and see what the telescopes inside the observatory are showing, he said. There will also be cameras that can record footage of the stars and constellations. And that technology can help students in the Ohio Valley study the sky.

The park manager said she is thrilled to turn Brooke Hills Park into the state's first "dark park," and hopes it brings more visitors to the park.

The master plan for the park also includes a veterans memorial, a multi-purpose complex that includes an ice skating rink and an ampitheatre.
