Toronto, OH —

Like many people, the men and women at the Riverside Medical Building in Toronto spent the holidays at home.

Leaving exam rooms and waiting areas empty and clean, but when they arrived on Wednesday they found something they never expected, a bullet and substantial damage to an exam room.

"The Riverside Medical Office had called in a complaint they had had some damage to their building. Apparently one of the employees went into one of the exam rooms and found a projectile," said Captain Rick Parker of the Toronto Police Department.

Police say the bullet went through the roof, causing damage to the ceiling and the exam room. Parker says this isn't a complicated investigation.

"We feel that it's the result of New Year's Eve. Our Police Department had a couple reports of gunshots from the hilltop area and also from in the city," said Parker.

There were no signs of gunfire that night but now things are different.

"Luckily it just went into a building and didn't harm anybody, nobody got hurt," said Parker. "But something like this could've ended up very bad."

Parker says they see this a lot on New Year's for one key reason.

"New Year's they don't have fireworks or something on hand so they go outside and discharge it to celebrate New Year's and naturally a firearm and alcohol does not mix," said Parker.

Parker says they are following leads they received on New Year's Eve, but admitted that it will be difficult to track down the person responsible.
