Burglary Suspect Behind Bars In Belmont County

BARNESVILLE, Ohio —

A man police said was involved with a string of local burglaries is behind bars in Belmont County.

Police said Joseph Hitt led them on a search that lasted roughly two hours in Barnesville on Friday.

Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson said his department has been looking for Hitt for a while on seven burglary warrants.

Barnesville Patrolman Chris Hanes caught up with Hitt first when he spotted him walking out of an apartment building feet away from the Barnesville Police Station.

Hanes said, "He looked to me and then he just kind of hid his face. I looked in my rear view mirror and he continued to look over his shoulder and get in the vehicle."

Hanes said he followed Hitt across town in his car and then on foot.

Hanes said, "He was already bailing out of the car and running up towards the woods."

Hanes said he called for back up from any law enforcement officer available, then Hanes followed Hitt into the woods.

Hanes said, "The chase was on."

Then, Hitt disappeared, but he wouldn't stay hidden for long.

Hanes said, "I came across him again on the north end of town in an alley and he took off on foot again."

Hanes said this serious game of chase came with a lot of uncertainties and officers were prepared for anything.

Hanes said, "We have no idea why he's running or what's on him. You just don't know."

Police finally caught up with Hitt in an apartment complex on North Lincoln Avenue.

Hanes said, "He explained to me that he had been running for a long time. He had seven outstanding warrants just in Belmont County."

Authorities in Harrison County confirmed that they also have a warrant for Hitt's arrest.
