Businesses Cash In On Beast Of The East

Area baseball fields soaked by rain will soon be filled with high school baseball players and their families for the 20th annual Beast of the East tournament. It’s a big cash draw for the Valley as 126 teams from 17 states all spend the weekend in the area.

"We're delighted to be part of the event," said McLure Hotel manager Cynthia Johnson.

Johnson said players, coaches and fans help to fill up the 160 rooms in the downtown hotel.

"At this point we do have a few rooms available, but we're hoping with the busy weekend that we foresee ahead of us that those rooms will be occupied," Johnson said.

The area’s restaurant managers said they’re also looking forward to the tournament that brings many new and familiar faces through their doors.

"We do get some repeat customers also from teams that have been here in the past," said Generations manager Mike Duplaga. “It allows us to bridge that gap between lunch and dinner because you have a lot of teams looking to go out in the middle of the day who may have nothing to do from 3 to 6 p.m."

Business managers said they aren't too worried about the weather, because they know a few sprinkles can't stop spirited high school baseball players and their families from heading to the area for the games.
