Cabela Drive to be extended, fifth hotel to be constructed

By Philip Stahl

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va.—

The Ohio County Development Authority has received two bids from contractors to extend Cabela Drive about 400 feet past the West Liberty University Highlands Center in order to complete the loop around the town and power centers.
"We're looking at a project that will take only a few weeks and cost roughly $400,000," said County Administrator Greg Stewart.

The intersection where the road is going to be extended already has traffic signals.

"We have a new tenant that is finishing up their office space, and with 125-some employees, this extension will give them access to the parking lot and their front door," said Stewart.

The Development Authority will meet Oct. 23 to decide on who will be the contractor for the job.

"We hope to have it started soon and end before the weather gets too cold for asphalt plants to close," said Stewart.

In other news, a fifth hotel is under construction at the Highlands. Contractors tell NEWS9 the site will be an extended-stay hotel and is located behind the Robinson Automotive car lot.

"The Holiday Inn will open this November, the Microtel opened this past summer. The Hampton Inn is looking to open up in late December or early January, and the fourth hotel hasn't broke ground yet," said Stewart.

The fourth hotel will be located directly across from the Microtel. A name on the hotel chain has not been announced.

Stewart also mentioned that retail sales are up at the Highlands and they are anticipating a strong holiday shopping season.
