JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio --

One woman was transported by emergency crews after a car crashed into a tree in Jefferson County on Tuesday.

Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol Wintersville barracks said Kearstin Nelson, 20, of East Liverpool, was injured.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. on state Route 7 southbound, about one-half mile from the Sammis Power Plant in Stratton.

Troopers said Nelson was transported to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. The extent of her injuries was not released as of 4:10 p.m.

A man who witnessed the crash described it as "horrific." Kevin Denholm said it was "the most frightening thing I've ever seen."

Denholm said he was driving north when he noticed a Chevrolet Monte Carlo leave the road at what appeared to be a high rate of speed.

"It hit the ditch, went airborne and struck a tree," Denholm said.

He said he stopped his car, ran across the highway to help the woman and called police.

The crash remains under investigation. Stay with NEWS9, WTOV9.com, and WTOV9 Mobile for continuing coverage as details become available.
