CARROLLTON, Ohio —

A local high school student will get to join his classmates on the graduation stage after a dispute over his absences while caring for his sick mother.

Teresa Fisher is in her third fight with cancer and her son, Austin, reportedly missed a lot of school while he was caring for her.

According to a joint news release from the Fisher family and Carrollton Exempted Village School District, both sides came to an agreement to allow Austin the chance to walk with his class on graduation day after his mother provided additional information concerning Austin's absences. The school said that information had not been previously provided to the district.

The news release said the district and the Fisher family just want to move on from all of this and don't want to be sidetracked from the mission of educating children with more attention drawn to this subject.

Fisher told NEWS9 over the phone that she could not speak on camera because she signed an agreement with the school. But, she said she wanted to say "thank you" to NEWS9 and to all of the people in the community who supported her family during this whole issue.

She said she is very happy with the decision and ready to move forward.

The news release was dated Monday, April 16, but NEWS9 received it on Tuesday, so it is not exactly clear when the school met with Fisher and when it decided to make the change.
