OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

Vernon Dunnom was arrested Friday, charged with the death of a man in Miami, Fla. But on Monday, just a few days later, he walked out of jail with his name cleared.

Dunnom spoke with NEWS9 just moments after leaving the Northern Regional Jail.

"I just want to forget about it, move on, focus on school, and this upcoming season for football. Just look out for the Hilltoppers in 2013," said Dunnom, the West Liberty football team's defensive end. "That's all I got to say."

Dunnom was all smiles as he got into a car and left the jail. He said the whole time he was locked up, he believed in his school, coaches and friends to make things right.

"Once we found out Vernon had been charged, he had made the comment that he wasn't in Florida at the time this incident took place. We knew we had ways to find out if he had done various things on campus, like going in and out of his dorm, those types of things," said Robin Capehart, president of West Liberty University.

Using receipts, cameras, and security records, university officials quickly compiled a list of places Dunnom had been on Nov. 17, the date the incident took place in Florida.

"I can't help believe that if there had been a little more police work done by folks other than people on campus, they would've discovered it before they rushed in and took him off," said Capehart.

On Monday afternoon, officials in West Virginia received a letter from the State Attorney's Office of Florida saying all charges were dropped and requested Dunnom be released immediately.

"It's unfortunate that it happened, but Vernon is the type of kid that is going to make a positive of it," said West Liberty Head Football Coach Roger Waialae. "He's going to be stronger for it."

Despite his release, Dunnom still has more work to do.

"Vernon and I are going to get his record expunged. That's important to Vernon because he has never been arrested for anything in his life and never had any relationship with police officer," said Attorney Dave Jividen. "So the rest of his life he can continue to be what he has been, which is a law-abiding citizen."

While officials in Florida will have to move forward with their case, Dunnom must move forward with his life. He told NEWS9 that one of his biggest concerns would be his upcoming final exams.
