Cheerleaders compete for champion title at WesBanco

By NEWS9

WHEELING, W. Va. —

Cheerleaders across the Ohio Valley competed for a championship title Saturday in Wheeling.

About 30 cheering squads competed in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference 2012 competition at WesBanco arena.

Usually there are four divisions for the squads. But this year, the board added a fifth one, so they will crown five champions.

Director of OVAC Cheering Libby Shepherd said it's a chance for cheerleaders to show their athletic abilities.

"I think it's finally a chance for cheerleaders to shine. All year long they cheer for football and boys and girls basketball, and this is really time for the community and the schools to back the cheerleaders," said Shepherd.

NEWS9 will air a replay of the competition Feb. 18 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
