WEIRTON, W.Va. —

Weirton City Council passed a resolution Wednesday during a special meeting to request more information about the construction of a proposed school-based health care facility at the site of the new elementary school along Pennsylvania Avenue.

A representative from Weirton Medical Center explained why hospital officials who once supported the health center withdrew their support.

"We were concerned. We didn't have definitive answers. We weren't involved in the process," said Vince Deluzio, an attorney for Weirton Medical Center. "What role are we to have here?"

Former Sen. Ed Bowman also expressed concern about the financial impact on Weirton Medical Center.

"When you bring someone here, they want to know about your education, your recreation and they want to know about your health care service," said Bowman. "So we can't afford to lose that."

Change INC. was slated to run the health care center. Officials with Change said in a news release, "At no time was Weirton Medical Center cut out of any discussion regarding the school-based health center nor has any explanation been given for their baseless claim that the health center would have a negative impact on the hospital."

Council members stated several times during Wednesday's meeting that they cannot make decisions about the health center. They can only request more information from the Hancock County Board of Education.

"All the players are in this room right now except the ones that needed to be here," said Councilman David Dalrymple. "That's the school board."

Weirton City Council officials said the resolution requesting more information would be sent to the Hancock County Board of Education on Thursday. They were asking for clarification within 30 days.
