City Of Steubenville Could Have To Cut About 13 Percent Of Staff

STEUBENVILLE, OH —

Steubenville city leaders have announced that they are short roughly $1.8 million for the 2010 fiscal year.

This effects those who are funded through the city's general fund, such as firefighters, police, street workers and city government employees.

"We're going to have to terminate at least 30 public employees," said City Manager Bruce Williams in an interview with NEWS9 on Thursday.

The city doesn't have any new revenue coming in and Williams said without concessions from unions, a large number of employees will be cut.

Williams says he is encouraging employees to resign or retire, and by doing that they will receive a $10,000 incentive. He said this would be cheaper than layoffs.

"The idea is to relieve the city of having to furlough or terminate people permanently," said Williams.

City Council will meet next Tuesday to vote on the $10 thousand incentive proposal.
