City officials, community leaders hold press conference regarding Steubenville teen rape case

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Several Steubenville city officials and community leaders held a press conference Tuesday afternoon regarding a teen rape case.

Steubenville City Manager Cathy Davison, Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty, business owner and community leader Jerry Barilla and Jefferson County Chamber Executive Director Sue Hershey spoke at the event.

The news conference was held at Steubenville City Hall and was not open to the public. It was only for credentialed media. City officials made it clear at the start of the press conference that they would not discuss specifics of the trial.

Instead, they discussed only how the city is handling the logistics of the case and how the whole case has impacted the town.

The two teen defendants are charged with raping a 16-year-old girl on Aug. 11, 2012. One of the teens is also charged with transmitting sexually-oriented pictures of a minor.

Both defendants are student-athletes at Steubenville High School and both have pleaded not guilty.

The charges stem from a police report that was filed in Steubenville at 1:40 a.m. Aug. 14. The report states that people came to the police station "in regards to a sexual assault involving their juvenile daughter." Information was taken for a report and the subjects were referred to the Juvenile Division, the police report stated.

The non-jury trial is scheduled to start Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Jefferson County Juvenile Court. The trial is expected to continue through Thursday and Friday, starting at 9 a.m. both days. It is possible that testimony could be heard on Saturday.

Visiting Judge Thomas Lipps, a retired judge from Hamilton County, will preside over the trial. Jefferson County Judge Samuel Kerr recused himself in late August. The Ohio Attorney General's office took over prosecuting the case in late August after Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin also stepped aside.

At Tuesday's press conference, city officials and business leaders said they came together to tell what they called "the other side of the story."

"The case shouldn't be reflective of our town," said Davison.

Hershey said, "There is, however, always multiple sides to every story."

Davison said it would be inappropriate for the group to discuss any particulars of the case before the trial starts.

"We must allow the case to proceed without outside influence and let justice have its process," Davison said.

Davison said, outside of media, city officials don't anticipate a great deal of crowds or protestors and the city has not received any official notices or requests. Because of that, the Steubenville Police Department is scheduled to run on normal patrols, but all officers know they could be called in if the need arises.

"We don't anticipate any problems but ah we're ready for something if it would happen," said McCafferty.

Officials said no streets will be closed.

No one knows how many people could show up for trial, but city officials said they will provide updates if any concerns or issues arise with logistics.
