College Expands Program To Help Laid-Off Workers Diversify Skills

Belmont Technical College has expanded a program designed to help laid-off workers diversify their skills.

The college has recently expanded the Door Of Opportunity Grant, which could help many people get back to work.

"We've expanded that scholarship by four times. We can now help four times as many people," said Dr. Joseph E. Bukowski, president of the college.

For workers who are laid off, the program could be a door back to work.

"It provides training both long-term and short-term, whether it be a degree program or a short-term certificate program," Bukowski said.

The college has already worked with Ormet employees, most recently to help them move up in the company. Now, with possible layoffs coming to Ormet, college officials said they think the program could help workers bounce back.

"(The program) helped the workers become more diversified, so if there are hard times and something happens at their place of employment, they may be able to go elsewhere and land a good job," Bukowski said.

The program covers the cost of tuition, fees and books for up to nine quarters.
