COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio —

A Columbiana County man was arraigned Friday after an standoff with Wellsville police, according to authorities.

Police said they received a call about shots fired Thursday about 6:55 a.m. and headed to 1712 Commerce St., where they engaged in a standoff with 34-year-old Joel Possage

Officials said Possage locked himself in his garage in the rear of his home, which police said contained many firearms and ammunition. At one point, Possage fired a shot at them, and officers said they heard guns being loaded.

No one was hurt.

Chief Joe Scarabino said he, along with two other officers from his department and Liverpool Township officers, surrounded the home and attempted to talk to Possage.

"Once they got there they were able to develop a repertoire with people around side the house and were able to learn about the suspect," Scarabino said. "Everything happened so fast, but at the same time just the distance between whenever he would talk and whenever he stopped seemed like forever."

After almost two hours, officers arrested Possage and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation processed the scene, Scarabino said.

Possage faces a felonious assault charge and is remains in the Columbiana County Jail on $250,000 bond.
