Commissioner reponds to bar allegation

  • comment(4)

NEWS9 has confirmed that charges have been filed against Belmont County Commissioner Matt Coffland and his son following an incident at the Tiger Pub in Shadyside.

Coffland owns the bar.

The incident happened on April 1, 2012 when Liquor Control agents began checking identification at the establishment.

NEWS9's Kate Davison spoke with the commissioner who said issues dealing with his private business should not affect public perception of his work as an elected official.

"Judge me as county commissioner as a county commissioner," said Coffland.  "Or judge me as a bar owner as a bar owner.  Try not to mix the two, because they should not be mixed. "

Coffland and his son have been charged with three counts each of obstructing justice.

"I've got a great record as a public servant," said Coffland.  "I love being a public servant."

A special prosecutor, Tom Hampton, is handling the case.
