Commissioners Approve Design For New Jefferson County Animal Shelter

Jefferson County voters agreed to pay for it, now commissioners said plans are moving forward for a new animal shelter.

A levy passed last November will provide $1.5 million for the new shelter. The 6,000-square foot facility will have 43 kennel runs and will cost more than a $1 million.

Commissioner Tom Gentile said Jefferson County has desperately needed the new facility and all of the commissioners were pleased with the initial design from Akron-based TC Architects.

"The whole concept of shelter design now is to move the animals through the facility get them acclimated to being part of a family again," said Susan Allen, of the architectural firm.

The levy money will cover the cost of the shelter and the architectural fees.

Construction is expected to start this fall with a completion date of fall 2010.
