Community Supports Crash Victim

Community support continues to grow for a Hancock County family coping with a tragic car accident that left their daughter seriously injured.

A few weeks ago, Mindy Michael, 21, couldn't leave her hospital bed, but her mother said she can now walk with a walker.

In August, a car accident due to faulty brakes sent Michael to a Pittsburgh hospital and caused a financial nightmare for her family.

The Michael family is now seeing a ray of hope.

When Bob Weber, of East Liverpool, heard their story and saw Michael's picture, he knew he had to help by raising awareness and funds.

Weber also dealt with family struggle.

His son-in-law battled a life-threatening illness.

"The overwhelming support of the community, in the last few weeks, has been great to our family, and it's time to pay that forward," he said.

Weber said the driver who pinned Michael against a tree didn't have enough liability coverage through their car insurance to cover her helicopter ride to the hospital.

"We have a real epidemic in the Ohio Valley," said Weber. "We have a massive amount of people without insurance and a massive amount of people under-insured. Unfortunately, our lawmakers in Columbus are not helping the situation."

Weber is also rallying support for another woman battling cancer.

"These are hardworking American people, blue collar workers who believe in the American system. They have been shafted by it and have been left in the cold. If it wasn't for hard working, good, American citizens, they would be out in the cold and dying," said Weber.

Weber is in the process of evaluating the specific needs of the families he's helping and will be setting up several fundraisers in the coming months.
