Construction For New Athletic Facilities About To Get Under Way

HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va —

A project that's been nearly 50 years in the making is taking shape in Hancock County. Construction on the new athletic facilities at Oak Glen and Weir High Schools should be getting under way within two weeks.

"They will begin work within two weeks," said Hancock County Superintendent Sue Smith. "We're hoping the weather cooperates with us and it doesn't get too rainy."

Both high schools will see artificial turf, a new scoreboard, seating that meets WVSSAC guidelines for playoff games and both will be marked for soccer and track.

"We have been assured that these stadiums will be ready for the fall season next year, so we're very excited," Smith said.

Athletes don't have to wait until next year to see improvements. The Field of Dreams project at Oak Glen is nearly finished.

"That was all done with private funds. It was mostly from contributions from our area and from some of our delegates that helped us out with that," said Smith.

Funding in the amount of $37 million will be split between the two new stadiums. It's a project that's been in the works since 1963. Smith said it will complete the campuses at both high schools.
