Contractor: New Cameron High School completion date delayed

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. —

Days after school officials said the project was on schedule for a summer opening, the main contractor said the new Cameron High School now isn't expected to be completed until after the new school year starts.

On Thursday night, the Marshall County Schools Board of Education, parents and contractors met at the site of the new high school. Board members and parents voiced concerns about the progress of the project.

When they asked the main contractor when the building would be complete, the contractor said "substantial completion" won't be until late September or mid-October.

Last week, Marshall County Schools Assistant Superintendent Wayne Simms told NEWS9 that the project might be completed earlier -- by the first week in July.

Simms previously said an early July opening will give staff about three weeks to move in prior to the first day for students on Aug. 1. He said any additional work beyond that would be minor touch-up work on the building.

On Monday, Simms said that after Thursday night's board meeting, project officials said that at this rate, a late September opening was more likely, and even by then, there could be some minor touch-up details needed on the school.

As for why there has been another delay on the project, Simms said there are multiple reasons, but the two main reasons are a late start and uncooperative weather.

The goal for the building -- what the board is aiming for -- is the substantial completion before students can attend. That is when all of the major work will be complete and keys to the building are handed over to the school.

Simms said there are a lot of areas that still need to be addressed, specifically masonry and the HVAC units.

"We could never put students in that building while it was still being worked on. Any time before the substantial completion, I don't believe the fire marshal will give you the occupancy part of it either while major construction is going on," Simms said on Monday.

He said by mid-June, officials will be able to much more accurately pinpoint an exact opening date.
