Costs Force County To Can Recycling

Hancock County officials said environmental efforts are too expensive.

The Solid Waste Authority canned the recycling program in April.

"Unfortunately people think you make money on recycling and that may have been true many years ago," said Solid Waste Authority Chairman Mark Vignovic.

Vignovic said one recycling bin cost the Solid Waste Authority $2,500 a month, including hauling the recyclables away.

State funding only covers $1,400.

Residents determined to recycle must drive to Brooke or Ohio counties.

The Solid Waste Authority received a $64,000 grant from the state and officials plan to open a recycling center on Gas Valley Road in the fall.

"This will reduce cost of the county cleanups," said Commissioner Jeff Davis. "It will also provide a service to residents on a weekly basis."

"We will also collect electronics, hazardous waste, paints and scrap metals," said Vignovic.

County officials will add compactors and upgrades to the building including a security system.

The recycling center will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting in the fall.
