The light at 1809 Center Street in Moundsville is on but there is no one home at the house where police found the bodies of Susan and William Coester. The Marshall County Prosecutor says the couple was found buried in cement in their basement. Harold Mauss is charged with the two murders. He is in the Belmont County Jail and according to the warrant for arrest, Mauss told the Belmont County Sheriff's office he had witnessed a murder last November.
"It is my understanding that he (Harold Mauss) went to them first and brought up the issue to them," said Herman Lantz, Marshall County Prosecutor.
In the complaint police say Mauss led them to the home in Moundsville. He then pointed to the basement window and told police that's where they could find the bodies.
Also in the complaint Mauss told police he met the couple at the Moundsville Salvation Army, and said they became friends.
People inside the Salvation Army say Harold Mauss came there looking for a place to stay. Susan Coester offered her home."
The couple volunteered their time at the Salvation Army. Their generosity may have led them to the wrong person. Neighbors say the couple was quiet and kind hearted.
"She (Susan Coester) was real caring person she was concerned about the house across that we're taking care of. He seemed like a real nice person. He was always sat on the porch with his cup of tea and big lab dog. They seemed like nice people," said Judy Fetty, a neighbor.
Those who lived around them say they would see William Coester out on his porch and would occasionally see the couple walk their dog. As the weather got colder and people saw less of Susan and William Coester, few took notice that they were missing from their home. The couple had lived in this house just under a year.
The Marshall county prosecutor says the Moundsville Police did receive a call from a family member, in November, saying the couple was missing. A Moundsville officer checked the home but found nothing. Mauss told police the crime happened on November second.
"They had not been seen and they were not spoken to since early november time. So we suspect they've been missing since early November," said Lantz.
The Coesters bought the home on a land contract and were making payments to a couple in Moundsville. The owners did not want to be identified but say they were told by neighbors and someone from the Coesters church the couple left town. They also say they never cleaned the belongings out of the house. Although they thought it was strange the owners did not worry because they say the house was empty of furniture and clothes. They say it seemed likely the couple had moved.
"The owners of the house assumed they had left town so she had the house cleaned out and I did see people cleaning up over their," said Lutechia Fields, a neighbor.
The Marshall County prosecutor says they are seeking extradition for Mauss who they say told them several different stories about how the couple died. According to the warrant for arrest he said two men and woman killed them then he even admitted to killing the Coesters. Now the police will investigate if any of those are true.
