Crews demolish Mingo Junction bridge

By Ryan Eldredge and  NEWS9

MINGO JUNCTION, Ohio —

The Ohio Valley has one less bridge.

Mingo Junction Steelworks, the new owner of the mill in the village, brought down the Ore Bridge and Trolley.

The demolition happened around 6 p.m. Crews used metal thermite charges that burned through the steel.

The demolition company, Frontier Industrial Corp. and the company AED were busy Thursday getting things ready on the bridge. While they were working there, local emergency crews were getting things ready on the ground, lining and clearing the streets.

Emergency officials and members of the demo crew met to look over the safety plan at the Mingo Village building at 4 p.m. For safety reasons, there was a 1,000-foot exclusion zone around the area of the demolition.

Anyone who wished to viewed the demolition was asked to do so from the parking lot next to Orin's Auto on Commercial Avenue.

The general public was aked to stay indoors during the blast time. In addition, people were asked to stay away from and not look out any windows that may face in the direction of the demolition site. This was to prevent people from looking directly at the charges.

Mingo police, fire and EMS personnel as well as the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Jefferson County Security monitored intersections within that zone to assure safety 15 minutes before the blast.
