BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

Firefighters worked for hours Saturday to put out flames that engulfed a barn in Belmont County while a few animals were still inside.

Dispatchers said a barn on Dunfee Road was reported to be on fire about 10:50 a.m. in Smith Township.

Smoke rose from the hay bales as firefighters worked to douse the hot spots.

Smith Township and Belmont fire departments responded along with the county tanker task force.

No one was injured, but it was a challenge to save some animals stuck inside.

"To my understanding, two calves (were inside the barn), which we did keep them in mind. We were inside early on, but when it got too bad, we had to stay out," said Capt. Mike Chambers of the Smith Township Volunteer Fire Department. "However, at the end here during our recovery, we did find them in the one corner and did bring them out on their own."

Chambers said the cause is unknown at this time, and the fire is under investigation.
