BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

A 10-year-old girl was one of two people airlifted by medical helicopters after a moving truck and semi-trailer collided on State Route 7 in Martins Ferry.

The crash happened near Hanover Street and the helicopters landed at approximately 10 a.m. One helicopter departed with the driver of the moving truck around 10:15 a.m. and transported him to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The child was in the passenger seat of the moving truck at the time of the crash and crews worked for nearly an hour to free the child from the wreckage. She was airlifted to Pittsburgh Children's Hospital around 11 a.m.

Officials said the semi-truck was hauling 44,000 pounds of fertilizer and the moving truck struck the semi from behind. An Ohio State Highway Patrol sergeant said there are conflicting reports about how the crash happened and the collision remains under investigation.

Traffic was stopped in both the north and southbound lanes on Route 7 in the area of the crash. Drivers were redirected at the Hanover Street intersection through downtown Martins Ferry.

As of noon, crews were in the process of reopening both lanes of Route 7 south, but officials said the northbound lanes will remain closed while crews investigate and clean up the crash site.
